Brief Report
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) in collaboration with Cass Business School, London and National Foundation for Corporate Governance (NFCG) successfully organized an International Conference on the theme “Global Economic Recession and Corporate Governance – The Role of Governance Professionals” on 23rd June, 2009 at Cass Business School, 106 Bunhill Row, London EC1Y 8TZ. Cass Business School offered their Conference Hall for the Conference and also provided logistic supports in the organisation of the Conference.
The Inaugural Session was addressed by Deputy Vice Chancellor, Cass Business School, London, Mr. Geoff Dart, Director, Dept. of Business, Innovation and Skills, U.K; Professor Igor Filatotchev, Director, Centre for Research on Corporate Governance, Cass Business School, London and Mr. Datla Hanumanta Raju, President, ICSI. Mr. N K Jain, Secretary & CEO, ICSI, made concluding observations.
The First Technical Session on “The Current Global Recession – Causes and Consequences” was chaired by Professor Igor Filatotchev, Director, Cass Business School and addressed by Professor Paul Palmer, Cass Business School, London, U.K. and Mr. B B Chatterjee, Council Member, the ICSI.
The Second Technical Session on “Corporate Strategies to Overcome Recession” was chaired by Mr. Mahesh Anant Athavale, Past President, the ICSI and addressed by Dr Chizu Nakajima, Cass Business School, London, U.K. and Mr. Harish K Vaid, Council Member, the ICSI.
Mr. Vinayak Sadashiv Khanvalkar, Vice President, the ICSI, chaired the Third Technical Session on “International Cooperation Amongst Governance Professionals”. Mr. Abhijit Mukhopadhyay, Vice President (Legal), Hinduja Group of Companies, London and Mr. Roger Dickinson, Chief Executive, ICSA, London (U.K.) were the Guest Speakers.
Delegates from India and UK attended the Conference. The International Conference was a grand success with the wholehearted support extended by the delegates.
The outcome:
The Conference provided a platform of international exposure and discussion with professionals from different countries to attain the objective of sustainable corporate governance. In other words, it enabled the participants to identify their strengths, learn new skills and explore new ventures and keep the tempo of good governance in this scenario.
The key outcome of the conference were :-
• Formulation of pro-active approach towards compliance of Corporate Governance and understand the compliance in tough time
• Enhanced awareness on the different aspect of Corporate Governance
• Identified the roles of professional in promoting good CG practices
